The key factors to make a website design look better are lighting and randomness. In this tutorial you will learn the steps of making a very nice piece of wallpaper based on random lighting. We will use Photoshop’s “Coulds” tool.

Step 1

First we will create some wavy patches. Open a new canvas, 6000 pixels wide and 4500 pixels high. With the default black and white selected, click Filter > Render > Clouds. Clouds are an excellent way to create randomness.

Turn the clouds into coloured patches, by clicking Image > Adjust > Brightness/Contrast. Set the Contrast to +100. You can also alter the size of the patches by changing the Brightness.

Step 2

Select about a quarter of the image and click Image > Crop. The image was made bigger to make the clouds smaller.

Click Filter > Distort > Wave. Increase the wavelength to Minimum 200, Maximum 300, and increase the maximum amplitude to 50. Randomise the waves until you’ve got a nice effect, and click OK.

Step 3

Create a new layer. Choose the gradient tool. Click on the coloured representation of the gradient. Choose Noise Gradient. Apply the gradient across the image.

Step 4

Desaturate the layer, by pressing Ctrl+Shift+U. The colours of a Noise Gradient aren’t useful here, but it’s a good source of randomised lighting when desaturated.

Change it from “Normal” to a Hard Light layer or a Linear Light layer. This noise gradient layer creates what I call “Canopy Lighting” – visible, unidirectional lighting, with a myriad of different intensities – as if it had gone through the randomising effect of a forest canopy. The problem with this lighting layer is that it doesn’t show up over the black areas.

Step 5

Go to your background layer and alter its Hue/Saturation, by pressing Ctrl+U. Tick “Colorize”. Play with the Lightness and Saturation, and select a Hue (colour). The final output will look something like the image shown below.

You can create nicely rendered chrome text using photoshop and this tutorial will teach you how you can do it very easily within few steps.

Step 1

Open a new canvas with size 300pxX200px. Fill the canvas with the foreground color of your choice.

Step 2

Step 3

Select the “Channels” palette by clicking on the Channels tab in the layers palette and create a new channel. Set the foreground color to white. Choose the text tool and enter some text.

Change the foreground color to a medium gray. I used R: 102, G:102, B:102. Choose Edit > Stroke and use 3 pixels and inside for the settings. This will leave a gray outline around the letters.

Step 4

De-select the text and go back to the layers by selecting the layers tab in the layers palette and create a new layer. Set the foreground color back to white and, with the new layer selected, use the text tool to re-enter the same text.

Select Filters > Render > Lighting Effects and use the following settings.

* Style: 2amspot
* Light type: spotlight
* Intensity: 17
* Focus: 34
* Gloss: 0
* Material: 34
* Exposure: 0
* Ambience: 4
* Texture channel: #4
* White is high: checked
* Height: 100

I set the light to come from the left and above. I also moved the sides of the circle so that all of the text was lighten up. You should end up with something similar to the picture above. You can try with foreground and background color variations to make more beautiful text effects.

But when's the last time one lone guy tried to capture 101 tips in video? In just 5 minutes of video? Set to music? This is the realm of dekePod, the once-every-other-weekly series from Deke McClelland. It's bold, it's brash, it's ridiculous. It's a podcast with serious issues. Enjoy. Get more dekePod at ...

In this tutorial you will learn how to make speech bubbles using path tool in photoshop. These bubbles are resizeble without breaking the edges.

Open a new blank canvas and start by selecting the Ellipse tool in the tools menu. The options bar for the Ellipse tool should be visible above your work area. The important settings here is to select paths mode as shown below.

Draw an Ellipse that looks something like the one drawn above. Adjust the size of the Ellipse to match the content you want to have inside the speech bubble.

Now we will add the part of the speech bubble that indicates the origin of the speech. Select the Pen tool in the tools menu and in the options bar set the mode to paths mode and set it to Add to path area.

Draw a triangle like the one shown below and make sure to connect the third dot with the first by clicking in it.

Fill the path with a white or whitish color. First create a new layer, then go to the tools menu and select the Path selection tool. Click the ellipse path, hold down shift while clicking in the triangle path, now you have selected both paths. Right click anywhere in the work are and select Fill path in the menu. The Fill path dialog in the image below will appear, in the drop down select color and the Color picker will appear, select the color you want.

Now we will apply some layer effects to style the speech bubble. Right click the layer you just created and select Blending options, now apply all the settings shown in the images bellow.

The final result should look some like the one shown below. As we used paths to create the speech bubble, we can easily resize the path without breaking the bubbles.
